back from vegas

Well, after spending another week in Las Vegas I can say that I am officially BEAT! I’m not sure if it’s possible to acclimate yourself to a normal schedule in that city, but if it is would somebody please share the secret?

Vegas was a lot of fun, though! Saw a couple of pretty decent shows – Zumanity (by Cirque du Soleil) and Phantom – the Las Vegas Spectacular. I’ve seen the Broadway production of Phantom of the Opera quite a few times and when I was instructed to get Phantom tickets for this trip, I thought I was getting tickets for the Broadway production. Welllll . . . not so much.

The play was decent and it was essentially Phantom of the Opera, but slightly condensed. There were a few added “effects”, but fortunately there were no white lions in the show and at no point did the Phantom break into dance! Whew!

As for Zumanity, that was a whole different kind of show. I’ll leave it at that! ;-)

The food was amazing and all-in-all it was a good trip! I think I need a little break from Vegas, though.

Hmmm . . . where to go next?

happy birthday or whatever

A couple of months ago my friend, Patricia, told me about a book written by a friend called Happy Birthday or Whatever: Track Suits, Kim Chee, and Other Family Disasters. Needless to say, I purchased the book because I do whatever Patricia tells me to do . . . I just do.

After countless days (63, to be exact) of walking by the book as it sat beckoning on my ottoman I finally cracked it open today to start reading. Now, less than 10 hours later I am finished!

What a great read! The author’s name is Annie Choi and her sense of humor is right up my alley! The book offers a glimpse into Annie’s life and her very humorous relationship with her Korean family (geez, I kind of sound like a critic – why not throw in the word “whimsical” while I’m at it!). The book is hi-larious!

I think my affinity to this book is due in no small part to the fact that one of my dearest friends, Hyun, is Korean and I have had the great fortune to have spent a lot of time with her family over the years. Hyun and I have been friends since high school. She was my lunch line buddy, in fact! Me being nearly 6′4″ and her being right at 5′ tall allowed me to use her as a leaning post in line on days when my legs were achy from football or baseball practice. Interestingly enough, she still makes for a wonderful leaning post! :-)

I really love Hyun’s family! One quick story – Hyun’s mom is a very accomplished pianist. In fact, I believe she majored in piano at a university in Seoul. But, I digress. A few years ago I invested (heavily) in my most prized material possession . . . the one material possession that I would clutch onto with all my strength if ever I were forced to choose only one while being shipped to a deserted island . . . my Steinway Model L piano. (cue angelic voices here)

Hyun’s mom, upon finding out that I had made this purchase asked me a question – “so, you pday da idap music on your piano?” . . . . . . . I asked her to please repeat (no one does Mrs. Kim’s accent like Hyun) . . . “so, you pray di rrap music on your piano???” . . . this time, a bit more emphatically. Having years of extensive training from Hyun in picking up Mrs. Kim’s English, I quickly replied “Oh . . . do I play the rap music on my piano???“. I, of course told Mrs. Kim that I actually had a bit of knowledge about several classic composers and that a sampling of my favorites included Beethoven, Chopin, Mendelssohn, and Mozart. This impressed her, I think, and we all shared a very good laugh. Mrs. Kim is hilarious without trying to be! Quite possibly the best kind of hilarious!

Anyway, back to Annie’s book. I absolutely LOVED it! If you’re seeking a fun, light read that will lift your spirits then be sure to grab a copy of Annie’s book! (again, with the critic talk . . . )

frisbee = happy!

I cannot believe it has almost been TWO WEEKS since my last post! I’m such a slacker! Actually, I have a pretty good excuse – not only have I been extremely busy with various photography jobs and volunteer activities (enter pity sigh here …), but Marley has not been feeling well for the last week. In fact, he’s been pretty sick.

Marley is just about back to form, fortunately. It’s been a while since I’ve captured any pictures with my trusty Canon point & shoot, but here are a few of the Mar-man from just before he started feeling under the weather.

Marley could teach us all a thing or two about living life. For Mar, frisbee = happy . . . VERY happy!

The weather’s been really weird down here in Florida for the past week, or so! The summer heat and humidity is upon us and with it comes our daily afternoon thunderstorms. Yippee!

Orlando is the “Lightning Capital of the World” but last week as far as I’m concerned it was the hail capital of the world, too! Check out these pictures from a hailstorm we had on Sunday!  It’s probably too small to see but it looked like it had snowed!

All of the hail you see in this picture fell in about five minutes! It was pretty amazing to watch . . . and some of the chunks were as big as golf balls!  (I suppose that’s fitting being that I live on a golf course)

One of the cool things about being in Central Florida is seeing the Space Shuttle launch from Cape Canaveral! Night launches are amazing to watch but this one was pretty spectacular, too!

This is the view from my back yard . . . Kennedy Space Center is 55 miles from the house I’m renting in Orlando!

This past weekend I assisted another Central Florida photographer (Heather Ahrens – link) on a wedding in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area. The couple (Ashley & Josh) were a lot of fun to photograph! They both have wonderful senses of humor and I love how it translates through their images!

Here are a few of my pic’s from Saturday:

I returned yesterday from a few nights in New York City. What a trip! It was actually a bit sad coming home. I had such a good time! Like I said before, I love that city!

Some of the highlights:

1. Watching the New York Yankees beat-up on the Boston Red Sox in Yankee Stadium. I was a little torn on this one ’cause I would typically root for the Red Sox . . . but, since I got the tickets from Johnny and he plays for the Yanks I had to root for the Yankees. J.D. played well and they won, so I was happy about that!

2. Seeing Kevin Spacey perform live on Broadway! Wow! That guy can really act!

3. Visiting MoMA (link)! Added bonus!: it was Target Free Fridays – everyone gets in FREE between 4:00 and 8:00!!! SCORE!!!

4. Eating at several incredible restaurants! My tummy has been disappointed ever since returning to Orlando. :-(

(no pictures . . . I was too busy eating!)

5. Just walking around the city. New York City is an amazing place! I love the diversity, culture, energy . . . I could go on and on and on . . . . . . . I can’t wait to go back!

I’m in New York City for a photo shoot this coming Memorial Day weekend!

I love this city!

I had every intention of posting the pictures I’ve captured around town but I forgot to bring the wire to connect my little point-and-shoot camera to the computer. Brilliant!

In the time since arriving I’ve had the opportunity to catch up with several friends who live in the area, eat at some great restaurants, take in a wonderful photo exhibition at the International Center of Photography (link), and to top it off my buddy who plays for the NY Yankees (Johnny Damon) got me some tickets for the last game of the Boston Red Sox/Yankees series at Yankees Stadium! The Yankees won and Johnny’s playing really well . . . what a night!

Tonight I’m going out to see A Moon for the Misbegotten (link) – a Broadway play starring Kevin Spacey. Should be really good! I’m anxious to witness Kevin Spacey’s acting in a live/theater setting!

I’ll be sure to post some of my pictures once I get back to Florida!

Have a great holiday weekend!

One of the most important goals that I want to continually emphasize in my photography business is the idea of “giving back”. To that end I have recently been donating a lot of my time to charitable causes in hopes that their important messages may be relayed through my photography.

Photography can be a very powerful tool to get a message heard since it’s one of the only ways we are actually able to freeze time and capture a moment, relay a message, or convey a thought . . .

A couple of weeks ago I photographed a woman named Kathy Waltz who was being showcased by a local Central Florida magazine for her considerable efforts in the community via Heart of Florida United Way (link), specifically with two wonderful organizations – Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida (link) and BETA Center (link).

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is a private, nonprofit organization that collects, stores and distributes donated food to more than 450 nonprofit partner agencies in six (6) Central Florida counties! The place was absolutely amazing with hundreds of thousands of pieces of donated food items in their warehouses. A truly incredible operation, to say the least!

BETA Center is another very important agency which focuses on parenting, teen moms and at-risk families. They reach over 17,000 people annually through the areas of Parenting Education Services, Pregnant/Parenting Teen Programs, Neighborhood-based Family Services, Emergency Family Support Services and the Residential Program!

I had heard of both of these programs in the past but wasn’t really familiar with what it was they actually accomplished in the community until this documentary project. Needless to say traveling to both Second Harvest and BETA Center was an eye-opening experience for me and I’m very thankful to have been asked to help tell their stories! Both of these centers, as well as the people who staff them are remarkable!

I’ve always believed volunteering to be a very honorable way to spend one’s time . . . and I’m amazed and thankful at how documenting these agencies and charitable causes via photography has really forced me to become intimately familiar with each and every cause!

I can’t wait to see what’s next!

back to running

•May 18, 2007 • Leave a Comment

So, after an evening of margaritas and delicious Mexican food I’ve decided to blog on one of my interests . . . running! Seems appropriate, right? Follow a few margaritas and a couple of bean burritos with a conversation on exercise? Oh, and consider this my pre-emptive apology for any typos you might find . . .

I got back into running a couple of months ago. I used to do triathlons a few years back and never quite shook the swimming, bicycling, running bug. Running’s been a special joy for the past few weeks for this techie geek because I recently invested in the Nike+ running system . . . you know, the kit where you have the sensor that goes into your shoes and it talks to your iPod while you run, tells you your progress, etc.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about check out this link (Nike+ – link)!

This thing ROCKS! I love being able to track my progress . . . and it’s extra-inspiring to have a voice come over the music and tell me that I’m in danger of being passed by the lady in the walker two blocks back! Ha ha!  Fear is a wonderful motivator!

If any of you are runners with the Nike+ kit, and are interested in getting a little running “club” going it’s easy to do via the Nike+ website! Let me know! I’ll do the legwork to get the club started! I’d be stoked to be part of your club!

Have a great weekend!
